Shady Mountain Pet Retreat is located on the Eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Amherst, VA
We are a mere 30 minutes from I 81 and Lexington, 5 miles from Rt. 29, near Charlottesville, and Lynchburg.
Our K9 and Feline guests come from around the world! We are only a 1/2 hour from Lynchburg Regional Airport.
Nowhere else does such an elite, luxurious pet retreat exist where the animals recieve top notch care, comfort and, if desired, daily training sessions with a professional trainer and author of 37 pet books.
While here your pet has the opportunity to play with other animals or, if desired, enjoy the quiet solitude of the Blue Ridge Mountains without being disturbed.
The Pet Retreat is on a 75 acre property that sits on 2200' high Shady Mountain. The views are spectacular! One can hear the cry of hawks, falcons and the gobble of wild turkeys. In the evenings deer frequent the yard, searching for dropped fruit from our numerous fruit trees.

Shady Mountain Pet Retreat is the ultimate luxury pet resort.
From the log exterior blending with the Virginia Mountainside, in which it is nestled, to the large indoor/outdoor suites, with community play yards, your dog will be indulged with exercise, training and lots of attention. Dogs go home happy and in great condition – mentally and physically.
Features:
6’ x 8’ indoor suites with dog door to 10’ x 6’ outdoor spaces
Each suite is uniquely decorated with window treatments, wall hangings, and other accoutrements.
Each suite features a house front: log, board and batten or lapboard with carriage lights between.
Full length tempered glass doors
Each room has a window
Each outdoor suite features a carriage light and 6’ high vinyl coated fencing with textured epoxy flooring
Ceiling fan/lights in every suite
Deluxe doggie doors
NEW! Suites 5 and 6 have privacy fenced exteriors.
Textured Epoxy Floors – No slipping and sliding on slick surfaces.
Raised beds and raised feeders
Personal shelves for items brought from home
Pet Boutique filled with wholesome foods, treats, comfy beds and safe toys.
Our programs:
Felines - Full Boarding - $32/day; $10 ea. add'l cat in same suite
Includes 6'x8' suite with 2 cat trees, 2 windows, litter box, fresh water and attention.
K9 Boarding - $42/day ($10 add'l for dogs over 100 lbs)
Day-long access to play yards and social time with other dogs. Two meals/day, midday and evening treats (Natural Balance biscuits). Lots of attention. If the pet remains for 4 or more days he/she will receive a basic bath (no extra charge) prior to going home.
K9 Boarding with Training - $62/day ($10 add'l for dogs over 100 lbs.)
Same services as Full Boarding with daily training sessions and consistency with each personal handling session (3 sessions/day)
Four week students go on 2-3 field trips for distraction proofing.

Free lesson at pick up if the dog receives this option for at least 4 days.
All handling and training is positive reinforcement with toys, treats and touch rewards. We don't use prong collars, choke chains or negative reinforcement methods.
If your dog has problems with any handling, we reserve the right to not offer the associated service (i.e. if he becomes aggressive about nail trimming, we won't force him to do so, but will work on shaping a more appropriate response).
This is not a mass market boarding kennel.
Shady Mountain Pet Retreat is an exclusive luxury pet resort. A place where you’d like to stay, but alas it’s only for pets.
All visitors must have current vaccinations, including Bordatella and be on heartworm and flea preventative.
Dogs with any sign of parasites will not be allowed out of their vehicles.
New Requirement: Proof of Negative fecal test within 7 days of arrival!
